The Great Migration in Kenya

Witness one of Africa’s greatest wildlife spectacles in the legendary Maasai Mara.

Nature’s Greatest Wildlife Journey

Every year, vast herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move through the Serengeti–Maasai Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water.

From approximately July to October, the migration reaches Kenya’s Maasai Mara, creating extraordinary wildlife encounters across the open savannah and around the Mara River. Predators follow the herds, making this one of the most exciting times for a Kenya safari.

THE MARA RIVER CROSSING

The Legendary Mara River Crossing

The Mara River crossing is the most dramatic chapter of the Great Migration. Huge herds may gather along the riverbanks before entering the water and continuing their journey across the Maasai Mara ecosystem.

The crossings are completely natural and unpredictable. Wildlife follows rainfall, water and fresh grazing  it is not a fixed timetable  which makes witnessing a crossing an extraordinary safari experience.

Maasai Mara Migration

Best Time to See the Great Migration

JULY

The first large herds begin moving into the Maasai Mara and river-crossing activity may begin.

SEPTEMBER

One of the strongest months for large herds, predator activity and potential river crossings.

AUGUST

Large herds gather across the Mara, with excellent opportunities for migration and river-crossing action.

OCTOBER

Migration activity can continue as the herds gradually begin their journey south.

Current Kenya tourism information broadly identifies July–October as the Mara migration period, with August–September particularly associated with river-crossing activity. Exact timing varies with rainfall and grazing conditions.

Feel the Drama of the Maasai Mara

Thundering herds, dramatic river crossings and extraordinary predator encounters make migration season an unforgettable time to experience Kenya.

More Than a River Crossing

The Great Migration is much more than a single moment at the Mara River. Across the Maasai Mara, vast herds of wildebeest and zebra spread over the open plains while lions, cheetahs, leopards and other predators take advantage of the abundance of prey.

Even when a river crossing is not taking place, migration season offers exceptional wildlife viewing, game drives and photography throughout the Mara. Travellers can experience vast herds moving across the savannah, exciting predator encounters and the ever-changing landscapes that make the Great Migration one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife spectacles.

Beyond the migration itself, the Maasai Mara is renowned for its rich wildlife and outstanding big-cat sightings, making it an exceptional safari destination throughout the year.
